Product Description
IEC 61058-1 Clause 17 Motor Surge Load Cabinet for Switch Endurance Testing Surge Current 180A
Product Overview

The SN2117M Motor Surge Load Cabinet is a dedicated electrical load testing system developed for evaluating the making and breaking capacity, electrical endurance and operational durability of switches controlling motor and inductive loads.

The system is designed around the requirements of IEC 61058-1 Clause 17 and related national standards. It generates a controlled motor-starting surge current of up to 6 times the rated current, while maintaining a specified power factor of 0.6-0.65. After the initial surge event, the equipment can automatically transition to the defined rated-load condition for continued endurance testing.

By combining resistive and inductive loading in one cabinet, the SN2117M eliminates the need for operators to manually reconfigure individual load components during the test. A PLC-based control system and 7-inch color touchscreen HMI provide centralized control of voltage, current, power factor, energization time and cycle count.

The cabinet is suitable for testing appliance switches, motor-control switches, contactors, protectors, motor controllers and other switching components subjected to motor starting current and repeated electrical loading.

Test Procedure

The SN2117M is operated together with an external test fixture that controls the opening and closing action of the device under test.

Step 1 — Connect the Test Circuit
Connect the load cabinet output terminals to the test fixture and wire the test sample according to the required test circuit.
Step 2 — Power Up the System
Switch on the main power supply and activate the equipment through the control-panel power switch.
Step 3 — Configure Motor Surge Load
Set the required surge current and power factor through the touchscreen HMI. The inductance and current settings can then be adjusted to achieve the specified electrical conditions.
Step 4 — Verify Surge Conditions
Start the inductive load manually and check the actual current and power factor against the target values.
If adjustment is required:
- Increasing inductance → higher power factor and lower current
- Decreasing inductance → lower power factor and higher current
Step 5 — Configure Rated Load
Set the required rated current and select the resistive-load mode. Activate the rated-load section and verify that the output current reaches the target value.
Step 6 — Set Energization Times
Configure the energization duration for both the motor surge load and rated load.
The typical surge-load energization setting is 60 ms, while the rated-load duration can be configured according to the applicable test requirement.
Step 7 — Enable Protection
Activate the continuous-energization protection function to prevent abnormal long-duration load connection.
Step 8 — Set Test Cycles
Enter the desired number of switching cycles through the HMI.
Step 9 — Start Testing
Press the start button to initiate the programmed test sequence.
Step 10 — Perform Switching Endurance Test
The external test fixture operates the switch under test through repeated opening and closing cycles while the SN2117M supplies the programmed motor surge and rated-load conditions.

Safety Protection

The SN2117M incorporates multiple protection functions, including:

  • Over-current protection
  • Over-voltage protection
  • Short-circuit protection
  • Earth-leakage protection
  • Continuous-load protection

These functions help reduce the risk of equipment damage during abnormal operating conditions and prolonged electrical testing.
