Product Description
BS EN 12983-1 Pencil Hardness Tester for Cookware Coating Scratch Resistance Test
The Pencil Hardness Test Apparatus is a specialized instrument designed to evaluate the scratch resistance and hardness of exterior organic coatings used on cookware and other coated products. This equipment follows the requirements of BS EN 12983-1 clause 8.4.2, 8.4.3 and Appendix K, which specifies performance testing methods for non-stick cookware coatings.
This testing device provides a simple and reliable way to determine the mechanical durability of coating surfaces by applying controlled pressure with standardized pencils of different hardness grades. The test result helps manufacturers assess the wear resistance and surface quality of coating materials. The tester is widely used by cookware manufacturers, coating laboratories, quality inspection institutions, and product certification bodies for coating performance verification and product development.
Testing Principle
The pencil hardness test evaluates coating durability by using pencils with defined hardness levels as the scratching element. During the test procedure, a pencil is placed in the testing holder and pressed against the coated surface at a fixed angle and controlled force. The pencil is then moved across the coating surface. After testing, the surface is inspected for scratches or coating damage.
By repeating the procedure with pencils of different hardness levels, the highest hardness grade that does not damage the coating can be determined. This value represents the scratch resistance level of the coating material. This method is widely recognized for assessing the mechanical strength and durability of coating layers.
